Nothing like a walk off and the Milwaukee Brewers pulled off a dramatic 7-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates Monday night at American Family Field.
Keston Hiura who entered the game to play first base after Rowdy Tellez pulled a muscle scoring an early run, delivered the game winning, two run homer off Will Crowe in the bottom of the ninth. The line drive kissed off the top of the yellow padding in left field that touched off a wild celebration. While Hiura was the hero with his second walk off homer of the year, former number one draft choice Garrett Mitchell continued his improbable first couple of days in the big leagues. Called up last weekend, Mitchell’s first big league hit was a two run single that produced the eventual winning run against the Cubs on Sunday and Monday night, he came through with his first major league homer, a two run blast to right that tied the game at 5 in the bottom of the eighth.
The Brewers got out to an early lead, plating three runs in the third. Willy Adames punched an RBI single to right and then Hunter Renfro brought home two more runs with a double into the right field corner. Corbin Burnes got through four scoreless innings but ran into trouble in the 5th, giving up three consecutive singles to the 7, 8 and 9 hitters in the Pittsburgh lineup that delivered one run. Shortstop Oneil Cruz then put the Bucs in front with a scorching three run blast. Burnes would give up another solo homer to Rodolfo Castro in the sixth that gave the Pirates a 5-3 advantage. Burnes’ line was 6 innings, 8 hits, 5 runs with a walk and five strikeouts.
Brent Suter, celebrating his 33rd birthday, gave Milwaukee two scoreless innings of relief to set the stage for the long ball heroics. Devin Williams worked the ninth to pick up the win, Milwaukee’s third straight and their first three game winning streak since July.
The Brewers will send Jason Alexander to the mound in game two of the series Tuesday night. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:35 PM with a 7:10 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
