GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Over 70 Afghan refugees have resettled in the Green Bay Area. Karmen Lemke of the Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Green Bay says 71 such refugees have arrived in Green Bay.
“So we’ve ramped up very quickly now in terms of welcoming and reception of those new arrivals,” Lemke told WTAQ on Tuesday. “Things are going fairly well.”
The organization helps with food, housing, and cultural orientation.
“What I mean by cultural orientation is really the integration into the community,” Lemke says. “Our families who have school age children, enrolling them in school, working with those that are ready to take a job.”
Around 125 are ultimately expected to settle in the area, and will be here sometime in January. Several have already obtained work. Lemke says that a number of local companies have approached the charity about hiring those refugees.
