BELLEVUE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – COVID-19 booster shots are being offered to eligible Americans across the country, but that’s not the only shot being offered.
Medical professionals, including Bellin College nursing student Emily Kuske, expect flu cases to rise.
“I know we’re doing ok in COVID units and at local hospitals and we’ve already seen with the change in weather,” said Kuske. “Getting closer to flu season, having more COVID cases and flu cases at the same time.”
It’s why Kuske and other students gave flu shots Saturday, to fight the potential twindemic: a rise in both COVID and influenza cases.
Meanwhile, Dr. Brad Burmeister tells FOX 11 while the flu season is still getting underway in the state, Wisconsin is doing very well.
“In the last reporting period, almost 8,000 people in Wisconsin had an influenza test, but we did not trigger any possible cases. I have heard from colleagues around the country that they have started to encounter a rare influenza diagnosis, but we haven’t seen it locally or in our state yet, despite a lot of testing.”
But that doesn’t mean we’re in the clear.
Kuske adding this on the chances of a twindemic.
“There’s a pretty high chance of having this twindemic of both influenza and COVID-19. Just because the transmission is very similar and it seems to happen at the same time of the year. The colder it gets, you know, it just seems to affect equally.”
Kuske also saying being vaccinated for both COVID and the flu, which you can get at the same time, can prevent a twindemic from happening.
