WINNECONNE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — With the holidays around the corner, health officials are continuing to encourage folks to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Douglas Nelson came to the Winneconne-Poygan Fire Department on Monday to get his booster shot.
He got his first and second doses of the Pfizer vaccine in February.
“It’s very convenient to get it now and I do look forward to spending some time Thanksgiving, Christmas. I’ve got a little vacation planned down in Florida and just want to get it over and done with and hopefully that helps take care of it for me,” Nelson said.
Winnebago County Health Director Doug Gieryn says the primary surge of vaccines right now is booster doses.
“We still are seeing people seek their initial first and second dose but booster doses are probably the majority of doses that we’re seeing right now,” Gieryn said.
Gieryn says they’d like to see more people getting their initial dose, especially as the weather gets colder.
“As the seasons are changing we’re moving indoors and just moving indoors is a great reason to get that vaccine if you haven’t done it already, and of course our holidays are coming up and we really want to get together and be safe with family and friends, especially those that can’t get the vaccine now are more susceptible may not build an immune response,” Gieryn said.
Gieryn says hospitalizations and cases remain high throughout Wisconsin, and is urging everyone to get vaccinated if they haven’t already.
“Outside of vaccination, masks work. Plenty of evidence that really supports that masking works, especially when you’re indoors. We really want to see people be careful as they’re moving indoors and help us continue, hopefully with this now beginning of a downward trend in cases so we can just get back to normal circumstances,” Gieryn said.
To be fully vaccinated by Thanksgiving, you need to receive your first dose of Pfizer by Oct. 21.
If you plan to get the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, you need to receive your first dose by Nov. 11.
