ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Brown County wants to know what it would take to turn a former power plant location into a state-of-the-art port facility, as part of the effort to move the coal piles out of downtown Green Bay.
The county wants to transform the site of the shuttered Pulliam power plant at the mouth of the Fox River into a new home for the coal piles, which sit 2.5 miles upstream. The coal piles, owned by C. Reiss Coal Company, have been on property along the Fox River south of Mason Street since 1904.
On Monday, the Brown County Harbor Commission endorsed issuing a request for proposals to hire an engineering firm to design construction of a port facility, according to Port Director Dean Haen. The item now goes to a committee and then the full County Board for approval.
“We believe if we get this project shovel ready we may be more successful in getting grant money to (fund) construction of the project,” Haen said.
The county hopes to get proposals back by the end of the year, Haen said.
The county has already received a state grant to help buy the site, and legislation could provide additional state funding.
There is no set timeline for the possible move of the coal piles.
