GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A return to fireworks shows and 4th of July celebrations means a return to holiday travel as Wisconsinites are expected to hit the road this coming weekend.
“Just over a million Wisconsinites, about 1.02 million will be traveling at least 50 miles or more from home at some point during the holiday weekend,” says Nick Jarmusz with AAA. “This is an auto-centric weekend, the vast majority of people will be traveling by automobile so just bee safe on the roads and expect to run into more traffic.”
Jarmusz says that despite lower traffic volume last year, the rate of fatal car accidents actually increased.
“Even with the drop off in traffic volumes that we saw during 2020 we still saw a really troubling increase in the number of fatalities happening on the road,” he said.
While July 4th is indeed a more driving-centered holiday, that doesn’t mean you should expect airports to be empty. Jarmusz says it’s quite the opposite.
“We also are beginning to see a pretty strong resurgence in air travel,” Jarmusz said. “The airports are going to be probably busier than they’ve been at any time in the last 12 months.”
Very few fireworks shows and Independence Day celebrations were held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
