GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Two outdoor pools will be open this summer in Green Bay, but a third remains closed as the city experiences a lifeguard shortage.
The Green Bay Parks Committee provided an update on pool staffing during its meeting on Wednesday.
Officials say Resch Aquatic Center and Colburn pools are operating, but Joannes Aquatic Center cannot open unless more lifeguards are hired.
“We are at a very bare bones staff,” said Ann Moeller, recreation supervisor for the city of Green Bay. “We’ve had to close some sections and piecemeal some schedules together.”
Moeller says the city needs 24 more full-time lifeguards. She says 22 new lifeguards will be trained by this afternoon.
There is one more lifeguard training course next week. Up to 12 people have applied. Moeller says even if all those applicants become lifeguards, that’s not enough to get all three facilities up and running.
However, the city could get to full staff at the two facilities that are currently open.
Parks committee members say Joannes Aquatic Center takes the most lifeguards to open. It is currently open only for swimming lessons.
With the current staffing, it was either open Colburn pool and the Resch, or open only Joannes.
