GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Only one pool is going to be able to open this weekend in Green Bay.
Saturday is the day the pool season starts, but the city’s parks department only has enough lifeguards to open Resch Aquatic Center on the city’s west side.
“Each pool takes a different level of staffing,” said Ann Moeller with the parks department. “With the number of lifeguards and facility attendants we have we are able to staff Resch Aquatic Center, so that is the pool that we decided to open.”
They have 22 lifeguards on staff right now. They’re looking to add around 30 more.
There is hope, however, that they’ll be able to open a second pool the week after. More lifeguards are expected to be trained up next week.
“Coburn does not take as many lifeguards, Joannes takes more,” Moeller said. “Odds are it might look like Coburn.”
Moeller hopes to have all three of the city’s pools open by the end of the month.
Officials said last month that the lifeguard shortage is a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
