GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — There is a critical lifeguard shortage in Green Bay.
Ann Moeller with the city’s Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department says it’s not new, it’s just much worse.
“We actually had a shortage in 2019, too,” Moeller told WTAQ. “We only had one facility open last year. Lifeguard certifications last for two years, so anyone who didn’t work last year, their certification is up, and there was no opportunity to recertify.”
Certification takes between 25 and 30 hours to complete.
The city has about 30 lifeguards currently on staff. Moeller says they need 35 more if they want to open all three of the city’s pools again. If they were forced to open tomorrow, Moeller says, they would only have the resources to safely open one pool.
Moeller says they won’t skimp on safety.
If you’re interested in becoming a lifeguard, you can apply on the city’s website.
