GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — People in Brown County generated more waste in 2020 than the year before.
Brown County Resource Recovery says it processed more than 31,000 tons of recyclables, a 7.3% increase over 2019. The Brown County Solid Waste Transfer Station processed close to 175,000 tons of garbage, a 7% increase over 2019.
“When living and working patterns change, you often will see a change in waste disposal and recycling, and that held true in 2020,” Mark Walter, Brown County Resource Recovery business development manager, said in a news release. “With more people staying home in 2020, there was a lot more residential waste and recycling coming in. Fortunately, we have systems, people and technology in place to handle it all.”
Although it was closed for six weeks during the pandemic, the Brown County Hazardous Material Recovery facility took in more than 850,000 pounds of hazardous materials, up 4.9% from 2019. The more than 10,000 visits were the second-highest on record.
