KELLNERSVILLE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Some of the best conversations happen in a Kellnersville gas station.
Thursday’s debate is among three friends finding a solution for a busy intersection that some say causes problems.
“Remember Dave? What was that, last year?” asked Randy Shimek, a Kellnersville resident.
“We were sitting here like we are now. A woman stopped, came in, got some bottled water or something and took off and didn’t stop. And she got shmucked!”
Some say Highway T and Highway K in the Manitowoc County village have been a controversial topic for decades.
The question is whether the intersection should have two stop signs, or four?
We have cars that will stop because they think the other cars are stopping, cars that will go through because they think the other cars are stopping,” explained Kathy Cochan, another Kellnersville resident. “Because I live here, I hear horns all the time,” she said see, the horns…
Cochan lives on the corner of the intersection. And she’s pretty vocal about where she stands…
But this trio says the decision impacts more than village residents.
It can be hard for truck drivers who use the highways to avoid the interstate.
“Especially if you’re coming from the south,” added Shimek. “Like I told ya earlier, if this were flat land then it may not be that big of an issue but when you’re hauling”
“When we get snow and winter here, it gets really nasty and I’ll tell ya what. A truck that’s stopped is going to have a hard time getting up the hill and up the road,” butted in Dave Johnsen.
But some residents say the stops signs shouldn’t be the only options.
“The rumble strips would work good with flashing lights,” offered Kurt Isley, another Kellnersville resident.
The village says ultimately they want the people to decide.
On April 6th residents will get the chance to vote yes or no to making the intersection a four way stop instead of two.
