GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Around 11 a.m. on Sunday, Green Bay Police say they found a man who is wanted on several charges. The encounter lead to shots being fired, a stand off with the suspect refusding to get out of his vehicle, and law enforcement shutting down an area near Walnut Street and Ashland Avenue for much of the day.
“Cops were like clearing out the entire area. He was like are you stupid, ‘he’s got a gun’ ha ha ha,” Nicholas Vandenberg told FOX 11.
“I seen them bring in the K9 unit, so I’m like okay obviously it’s a standoff situation right now,” witness Miller Heart III said. “I don’t know who fired the shot.”
Green Bay Police tell FOX 11 three police officers fired their weapons, after being shot at, following a police chase on Green Bay’s west side. No one was hurt.
“This can be very traumatic for any community,” Green Bay Police Operations Commander Kevin Warych said. “But, the officers did an outstanding job of keeping the community safe and they acted very heroically in a situation where they were being shot at.”
“I’d seen the car pit-maneuvered over backwards, then they were obviously yelling commands, ‘put the gun down, put the gun down,'” Heart III said.
Law enforcement spent hours negotiating for the suspect’s surrender; and eventually, he did.
FOX 11 asked police if there was a concern about the suspect potentially having a explosive device in his vehicle.
“That was part of the, uh, one of the resources that we did deploy,” Warych answered. “There’s a working relationship with the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and they did deploy their bomb squad out here… and officers did encounter a suspicious device.”
Ultimately, the bomb squad found that the device was safe. Police are not releasing the suspect’s name at this time, or the charges that he is wanted for.
Commander Warych says the suspect was seen by medical staff after being taken into custody. No more information will be released until today.
“Green Bay is a very safe community,” Warych said. “One incident does not define a neighborhood, one incident does not define a city.”
Commander Warych says the suspect was seen by medical staff after being taken into custody. No more information will be released until Monday — at the earliest — and detectives will remain on scene for some time, collecting evidence.
