MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — The first COVID-19 vaccines have arrived in Wisconsin.
UW Health in Madison has announced in a press release that a shipment of the vaccines, produced by Pfizer, has been delivered to their ultra-cold storage facilities for distribution.
Vaccination for front line health care workers is expected to begin today.
Wisconsin was set to receive a little under 50,000 COVID-19 vaccines produced by Pfizer, the first vaccine to be approved for emergency use in the United States.
DHS Deputy Secretary Julie Willems Van Dijk told reporters Monday that “Phase 1A” distribution will involve inoculating healthcare workers that are in direct contact with COVID-19 patients, followed by those in skilled nursing facilities.
The Pfizer vaccines will be sent out to regional hubs across the state before being sent out to clinics due to storage requirements. The locations of those hubs are largely being kept secret on the advice of the US Department of Homeland Security, according to officials.
