GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Area healthcare officials are bracing for what they think will be a large outbreak of COVID-19 in the wake of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Prevea CEO Dr. Ashok Rai says that it will be a bit before they know whether or not COVID-19 was being served up alongside the turkey across America.
“We’ll wait until probably about mid-week and see how things really are,” Rai said on WTAQ’s ‘The Morning News with Matt and Earl’. “I think the data is a little skewed because of the holiday and a decreased amount of testing.”
Over the weekend, a record 53% of tests processed by the state of Wisconsin turned up positive–but that data comes on a very low day for testing overall due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
“We’re hoping that we won’t see a big spike in positives because [people gathered] for the Thanksgiving holiday, but that is one of our concerns going into the week,” said Rai.
Rai says that if you attended a Thanksgiving gathering with someone who has since tested position to quarantine immediately.
“If you look at someone who was positive and didn’t know it at Thanksgiving, we would suggest people get tested about six days after exposure,” Rai said. “Day six is when we really get worried.”
Your viral load would be at the highest on day six if you are indeed infected, so your chance of testing positive if you do have the virus is highest.
