Big 8 point white tail buck deer in Wausau, Wisconsin in mid December
GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Wisconsin Department of National Resources officials say signs are pointing to a stronger gun deer season than last year.
“In general it was a season that allowed for plenty of opportunity,” the Wisconsin DNR’s Jeff Pritzl told WTAQ. “I’ve gotten multiple reports from hunters that did pretty well in the rain on Tuesday.”
The nine day gun deer season ended on Sunday, and all deer had to be reported by 5:00 on Monday.
The COVID-19 pandemic, Pritzl says, sent more people into the woods this year.
“There were observations that more vehicles were parked at our public hunting grounds this year,” Pritzl says. “But it could be that people were choosing to drive separately instead of together.”
People have been seeking outdoor activities all year long. Attendance at state parks has been up and the state saw a robust fishing season as well.
Business is up at taxidermists and meat processors across the state, a sign of a healthy season. Hunting license sales for all deer seasons, including muzzleloader and archery, are up about 3% from last year.
Harvest numbers are expected Tuesday.
