GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The City of Green Bay provided an update to the Election Day numbers this evening.
During a 5:00 PM press briefing, Mayor Eric Genrich said things seemed to be going smoothly at polling locations across the city today.
Numbers reported just after 4:00 PM this afternoon showed over 8,100 ballots cast at polling locations today. That brings the total ballots cast to 39,829 (in-person and absentee combined), or about 70% of all registered voters in the city. That number is also 84% of the 2016 total.
“”You can’t always look into the crystal ball and see the future, but I think we will surpass 2016 numbers. I think a lot of communities are expecting to do that,” Genrich said. “I think there is more energy this time around on the part of both parties.
The Central Count at the KI Convention Center has tabulated 12,835 at last count. Genrich says that’s good progress, but with over 31,000 ballots there already this morning – there’s still a lot of counting to do.
Tabulators have also reportedly seen a number of jams today, but Genrich says that is expected to happen from time-to-time as you run thousands of ballots through the machines. There is a technician from the company that provides the tabulators on-site to fix any issues as quickly as possible.
But again, the final numbers likely will not be available for quite some time yet.
“I wish I could offer a real precise estimate, but I think we’re looking at the early morning hours of Wednesday,” Genrich said.
Everyone is able to vote until 8:00 PM. Dropboxes close at 7:00 PM, but voters with absentee ballots can still vote at a polling location if they haven’t already submitted their ballot.
Meanwhile, there could be some other action on the streets of Green Bay tonight as well.
“There are some demonstrations planned, but we have no reason to be concerned at this point,” Genrich said. “The chief and his command staff and the whole team are prepared for any kind of contingencies that could arise, but we have not heard of anything negative being planned.”
Live Election Night coverage starts on WTAQ at 8:00 PM.
