APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – The League of Women Voters and several other organizations teamed up to label Monday as Election Hero Day.
They’re calling it a version of a thank your poll workers day. Appleton League of Women Voters President Jeanne Robberts says it’s important to give clerks, staff, and poll workers the respect they’re due.
“Especially when people go to the polls, to remind them to understand how hard of a job this is, how much work went into making sure that our elections are fair and safe,” Robberts told WTAQ News. “All of the municipal clerks and all of the poll workers, especially this year, they’re risking their lives to make sure that we all have a right to vote.”
Robberts asked anyone who plans to vote in-person on Tuesday be respectful by doing things like wearing a mask and being kind to those working each polling location.
Robberts says especially in Appleton and Outagamie County with the misprinted ballots, Election Day can require a lot from everyone who’s on the clock.
“For every one of those that has to be redone, it takes 4 minutes. It takes 2 people, sitting side by side, looking at each other to make sure that each of those ballots are reproduced exactly as they were brought in so that they can be counted,” Robberts said. “[They] make sure that everybody bring a photo ID and that they have proof of residency to make sure that our elections are fair, and that you can be sure that everything will be counted and there will not be election fraud.”
Polls across the state will be open from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Tuesday. To find your polling place, click here.
