WEST DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The West De Pere school board decided to resume in – person learning today (Monday).
Virtual learning will still be available to students.
A special meeting was held Saturday night to weigh the pros and cons of staying online or bring students back into the classrooms.
The meeting started at 8 and went until just after 11 p.m.
The board did say they will have another meeting to address staffing needs — liked whether they need to hire more long term substitute teachers and acquire more P-P-E.
This comes after a special board meeting by the West De Pere School District Saturday night.
On Thursday, October 15, the district announced the decision to move to in-person learning on October 19.
Virtual learning will still be available to students when in-person instruction begins, according to the school district.
In a release from Friday, the De Pere Health Department says they strongly advise against in-person learning.
In the release, the department says they “would like to publicly reaffirm its long-held stance that in-person school instruction in our City is not advisable for staff and students until case numbers reach safe thresholds.”
De Pere Mayor James Boyd also showed his support with the De Pere Health Department’s stance against in-person learning:
“To be clear, as a former educator and coach for decades in the City of De Pere, including having been a teacher during the pandemic at the end of last school year, I fully empathize with the ongoing challenges facing staff, instructors, athletes, parents and students during this pandemic. These are difficult times, and I understand each of us longs for a sense of normalcy. However, we need to remain vigilant in stopping the spread of Covid-19. In-person instruction may pose significant, unnecessary risk to our students and staff, their family members or guardians at home, and the local businesses and organizations they are involved in or support.”
