MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Pheasant season starts today, but hunters heading out to the field may find far fewer birds than normal.
“Relative to what pheasant hunters may have experienced in the last couple years, there will be somewhat more limited birds being put out on the landscape, and some of our real small, isolated locations, that maybe got a few birds in the past, won’t be getting birds this year,” said Jeff Pritzl, DNR District Wildlife Supervisor.
It’s because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has limited the DNR’s production to around a third of normal. Wildlife Officials say in many places, daily hunting will end early. Quitting time will be reduced by two hours. They say that will give them the chance to re-stock public areas with new birds.
The season runs through Jan. 3, 2021.
