STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Republican Party of Door County had their headquarters vandalized over the weekend.
Vandals spray painted “Black Lives Matter” and anti-Trump slogans on the side of the building in Sturgeon Bay.
Sturgeon Bay Police Sergeant Jason Albertson says this is not the first time something like this has happened.
“It’s very heated on both sides. We see it… you can definitely tell it’s kind of intensifying recently, especially with the vandalization of signs,” Sgt. Albertson said.
“Sure deep down inside you don’t think this stuff could happen in Wisconsin. Right? Certainly not in Northeast Wisconsin or in Door County,” Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) said.
“I’ve lived in Sturgeon Bay pretty much my entire adult life and this is pretty disturbing,”Assemblyman Joel Kitchens (R – Sturgeon Bay) said.
Volunteers have since cleaned up the vandalism.
“Within a matter of minutes people were out here,” Gallagher said.
“I just would urge everybody, Republican or Democrat, to utterly reject the lawlessness and the violence,” Gallagher added.
Law enforcement says they are still investigating the incident.
