MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK)– The United States Navy on Saturday commissioned the Freedom-variant littoral combat ship USS St. Louis, says the Department of Defense.
USS St. Louis was built in Marinette by Lockheed Martin in conjunction with Fincantieri Marinette Marine, according to the U.S. Navy.
The Navy commissioned the ship at a private event due to health safety concerns and restrictions related to COVID-19.
The St. Louis is the 22nd littoral combat ship to be delivered to the Navy, and the seventh ship to have the name.
The first USS St. Louis first sailed the seas in 1828.
“Nearly 200 years after the first ship to bear the name was launched, today we commission the seventh USS St. Louis,” said Secretary of the Navy Kenneth J. Braithwaite.
