GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — There’s a massive piece of machinery on it’s way to Green Bay.
A massive, three story tall natural gas boiler is on a barge in Lake Huron on Friday, on it’s way to Lake Michigan and ultimately, the Green Bay Georgia Pacific Plant.
“It’s quite the piece of equipment,” said spokesman Michael Kawleski. “It’s about 385,000 pounds or nearly 200 tons.”
The $27 million boiler is the second such boiler purchased by GP. The previous boiler was installed in 2015, and the new one will allow the 100-year-old plant to hit a significant milestone.
“The significance of this, is this will allow us to end our use of coal,” said Kawleski. “So for the first time in [the plant’s] history we won’t be using any solid fuel.”
The company is spending an additional $14 million to remove elements of the coal powered system. The change means the remaining smokestack on the property will be removed over the next two years.
The massive boiler was built by Trenergy, a Canadian firm, and is expected to arrive Monday.
