SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) – The Shawano Lake water levels battles continue as the Federal agency in charge of water levels will make a decision on another one-year renewal that would raise the levels to normal for another summer.
Shawano Lake currently sits five inches below normal.
The Federal agency says that is to prevent flood concern, but Gary DeFere, Shawano Area Waterways Management President says flooding is not likely and boaters need that water to rise with the decision.
“The lake would go back to what would considered normal levels which is about five inches higher than it is now.”
DeFere says if that is rejected, water levels will be too low for boaters to be on the water safely.
“If that happens we will have to deal with the consequences.”
He says those consequences include damaging boating equipment, hitting rocks or in some cases, risk getting thrown from the boat.
The water raise was approved last year on a year-by-year plan until a more permanent solution can be reached.
