MENOMINEE, Mich. (WTAQ-WLUK) — A judge ruled Friday that Menominee residents will vote Tuesday whether to cap the number of dispensaries in the city at nine.
The ruling also puts a temporary pause on Menominee issuing any new licenses.
Menominee Mayor Casey Hoffman says the judge wants voters to have their say before deciding whether to lift that pause.
A city council member had filed a lawsuit to delay the vote until November. The suit claimed state law requires a candidate to be on the ballot for a ballot initiative to take place.
“So right now, we’re kind of in a holding pattern waiting for this election, but we know it’s going to happen in August, so any voters out there with a mail-in ballot, go ahead and vote. Mail in your ballot and know that we are ready for this election,” said Hoffman.
Hoffman says Menominee has issued licenses to nine dispensaries. He says several others have invested thousands of dollars to open shops. By the end of next year, he says there could be 15 dispensaries in the city.
