GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Preliminary work is underway for a project to reconstruct Packerland Drive south of Mason Street on the city’s west side, with the major road closures scheduled to start next week.
The stretch of Packerland Drive north of Southwest High School to Mason Street has long had a high rate of crashes. In 2023, barriers were placed to prevent traffic from crossing between the frontage roads which run parallel to Mason Street — but that was a stop-gap measure until a larger project could begin.
That work is now underway, with construction underway on Trojan Drive, according to John Smyser, engineering technician with the Brown County Highway Department.
Starting June 9, northbound Packerland Drive will be closed north of the high school, while only one southbound lane will be open.
Additionally, all lanes will be closed on June 11 for sewer work, Smyser said.
A multi-lane roundabout will be installed at Packerland and Trojan Drive to better accommodate the traffic flow. The entire $4.2 million project is expected to be completed by mid or late August.
A previously-completed part of the project involved improving the Mason Street access to NWTC.
