STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — After years of moving, debate and refurbishment, a historic structure in Door County is celebrating its seasonal opening.
The Door County Granary in Sturgeon Bay Plaza is complete and will be offering tours Wednesday.
Guests can enjoy docent-led tours with the members of the Sturgeon Bay Historical Society, lemonade and cookies.
The Teweles and Brandeis Grain Elevator was built in 1901 along the Sturgeon Bay waterfront. In March of 2018, the 68-foot tall building was removed from its original spot and moved across the bay because the building was deemed to be unsafe. Thanks to community support and donors, the granary was saved from being dismantled and moved back to its original space in 2019 to become part of the now Sturgeon Bay Plaza development.
In 2021, renovation work began to turn the historic building into a three-season event space and agricultural museum.
The granary gave the community a sneak peek in the fall of 2024 before opening for the season in May of 2025.
The Door County Granary is the only restored wooden grain elevator on the Great Lakes. The other is in Cleveland, Ohio.
