Kevin Staudinger (Manitowoc Co. Jail)
MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A man suspected of starting numerous grass fires throughout Manitowoc County was arrested moments after starting one.
Kevin J. Staudinger, 57, of Franklin, was taken into custody Monday after allegedly starting a small grass fire in the town of Newton. During his arrest, investigators were able to extinguish the fire before it spread.
The investigation into a series of fires began several months ago when evidence collected at some of the fire scenes suggested they were intentionally started.
From there, investigators were able to identify a person of interest and began collecting additional evidence.
After Staudinger’s arrest, authorities searched his residence and found evidence consistent with evidence located a previous fire scenes.
Deputies are recommending five felony counts of arson. Because the investigation is ongoing, additional charges may be forthcoming.
Staudinger appeared in Manitowoc County court Tuesday where he received a $5,000 recognizance bond with restrictions prohibiting him from being in possession of alcohol or fire accelerants.
His initial appearance is set for April 7.
