GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Salvation Army kicked off its Christmas Campaign this week, with the goal to raise money to provide to those in need.
The Christmas Campaign is the organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year. It supports year-round programs and services that meet the basic, spiritual and physical needs of those that come to The Salvation Amy facilities.
“We think of this tradition as playing a critical role for all of the great work that The Salvation Army does not just during the season, but throughout the year,” said Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay Advisory Board Member Bill Matheson. “I have been able to witness the great work about how this organizations touches thousands of lives each year and changes people on a positive trajectory that they desperately need.”
Each branch has a Red Kettle campaign goal for the 2024 holiday season. For example, The Salvation Army in Green Bay hopes to raise $1.32 million, while The Salvation Army Fox Cities tells FOX 11 its goal is to collect $260,000 this season.
There will be opportunities for Match Days throughout the holiday season to raise even more. Outside of monetary donations, the Salvation Army encourages people to volunteer to ring bells.
Officials say success of the campaign relies on local businesses hosting red kettles. Volunteer bell ringers are instrumental to the whole campaign because red kettles accompanied by bell ringers tend to collect more donations than kettles that are unattended.
“We often say that an unmanned kettle is an empty kettle, so we really encourage everybody to get out there and do one hour of bell ringing,” said Nicole Hanley, public relations and marketing specialist specialist at The Salvation Army.
All donations made stay local and will provide food, shelter and social services throughout the year to residents who may be in crisis.
