GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Green Bay’s school board plans to give Vicki Bayer another school year as superintendent, hoping to use the time to explore new options for hiring a new district leader.
The board unanimously voted Monday to start contract negotiations with Bayer to remain as the district’s superintendent, but the district has said the deal will only be for the 2025-26 school year.
Bayer is eight months into her second stint as the interim superintendent.
“Her leadership has gotten us very far in the last several years,” said Green Bay School Board President Laura McCoy. “I’m looking forward to more of that.”
The contract Bayer is expected to sign next will remove the interim title, but the school board will still start discussing how to go about replacing her.
McCoy says those talks haven’t started because the board has been focused on the referendum that passed last week, which includes school consolidations.
“I think our board would be open to doing something more local,” said McCoy of the next superintendent search. “The last two times we’ve chosen a superintendent, that process I think, was maybe not all that we had hoped for. Speaking only for myself, I’d be very open doing something other than that.”
Green Bay School Board President Laura McCoy talks about a contract extension for Interim Superintendent Vicki Bayer and the process for hiring her successor.
For those searches, the district hired an outside firm to conduct a nationwide search.
FOX 11 requested an interview with Bayer, and she told us she would likely do one after a new contract is finalized.
Bayer has maintained she doesn’t want the superintendent job long-term. She reiterated that to FOX 11 off camera, saying she wants to be in the deputy position to help someone settle into the superintendent position who wants it for the long haul.
“Vicki has taken upon herself twice now to step up and perform duties that far exceed what we would have expected for someone coming in to execute some sort of contract for a year,” said James Lyerly, the board’s vice president.
Bayer took over for Claude Tiller in March, who resigned seven months into his tenure after making controversial comments on an Atlanta radio show.
Bayer also was interim superintendent for 14 months when Stephen Murley resigned due to health issues in April 2022.
