APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) -An event in Appleton is inspiring the next generation of women in STEAM careers.
On Wednesday, the Fox Cities Chamber held its 15th annual Smart Girls Rock event at Miller Electric.
It’s a mentoring event for female high school students aspiring to enter the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) field.
Aimee Herrick of the Fox Cities Chamber says this year’s event is special as they welcomed 150 students from 18 different schools for the chamber’s 150th anniversary.
“So right now, there are only 30% of women who are represented in STEAM careers so we are very excited to be a part of the movement to help increase that number,” Herrick said.
Appleton North freshman Ximena Soto says she looks forward to learning more about engineering.
“So I wanted to come to Smart Girls Rock because I’m interested in the field of engineering and I’m also interested in being a neurosurgeon so I wanted to look at all of the different career paths that I could take so yeah, I thought this would be a really good exploratory opportunity for me,” she said.
Thirty local female mentors with STEAM field careers guided students through 14 different interactive stations to help them get a feel for the many different jobs offered in the area.
