TOWN OF FREDONIA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A school bus in Ozaukee County was struck by a vehicle, then rolled and crashed Monday morning, injuring eight students.
It happened around 7:23 a.m. on County Highway E and Jay Road in the town of Fredonia.
Deputies say a SUV was traveling eastbound on Jay Road when it didn’t stop at the stop sign at County Highway E and struck the northbound school bus in the center.
The school bus spun 180 degrees, overturned on its passenger side and ended up in the ditch.
The school bus was a Random Lake School District bus with 36 students onboard, ranging from elementary school to high school age.
The bus was driven by a 53-year-old West Bend man who was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
The students evacuated the bus through the roof and rear emergency exits. Eight students were injured and taken to local hospitals and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Their injuries range from minor to serious, however none of the injuries are life-threatening.
The driver of the SUV, a 32-year-old woman of West Bend and her passenger, a 33-year-old Random Lake man, were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
A citation for failure to yield from a stop sign will be issued to the driver of the SUV, deputies say. An additional investigation is pending.
