GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Political newcomer and businessman Tony Wied came out on top in the 8th Congressional District Republican primary Tuesday, with 41.3% of the vote districtwide.
Wied was the Trump-endorsed candidate, but the competitive race actually had more than 58% of the votes cast for one of Wied’s two opponents.
Former State Senator Roger Roth received 33.8% of the vote, and 24.8% went for current State Senator Andre Jacque.
Political experience did not pay off for Jacque, who in the “county breakdown” only came out on top in Kewaunee County — one of the counties he serves as state senator.
Roth faired a little better. He dominated in his home county of Outagamie County with 45.6% of the vote there. Outagamie County had the second highest number of votes cast in this race.
Roth also won in nearby Shawano County, but by a slim margin over Wied. Roth won in two other Fox Valley counties where only a small portion of the county is included in the 8th Congressional District.
As for the overall winner, Wied won his home county of Brown County, where about one-third of all the votes in this race were cast.
Wied also won several of the less populated remaining counties where the candidates were new to the voters there — like in Marinette County, where he scored his highest percentage win with more than 49% of the vote.
Wied will now face the Democratic candidate, Dr. Kristin Lyerly, in the November 5 general election.
