GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The last of seven suspects arrested in connection with a large-scale drug ring was charged Friday. Felton Currie faces the most charges of any of them –28 — but, as with the others, the criminal complaint has been sealed from public view.
Currie, 46, had an initial appearance scheduled for Friday, but a jail officer told the court he refused to come out of his jail cell without an attorney. Court Commissioner Cynthia Vopal ordered him held without setting bond. Currie returns to court Tuesday.
Eleven of Currie’s counts are for manufacture & delivery of fentanyl, while three are for possession with intent to delivery fentanyl.
Also charged are: Michael Oliver, Jessica Wright, Ebony Austin, Kyla Sanache, Cheri Austin, and James Grandberry. They made initial appearances earlier this week. None have preliminary hearing scheduled yet.
At a news conference last week, police said the arrests were the culmination of a six-month investigation. The suspects allegedly were involved in trafficking drugs from Chicago to Northeast Wisconsin.
Five search warrants were executed in Brown County earlier this month. A simultaneous search of the stash house in Chicago yielded 12 kilograms (26 pounds) of fentanyl, four kilograms (nine pounds) of cocaine, 748 grams (1.6 pounds) of meth, 460 grams (one pound) of heroin, 16 guns and some marijuana.
Online court records reference “intercepted wire communications” as a reason for the sealed files.
Police originally identified Ebony Austin as Ebony Grandberry, but court records show the different identification.
