GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) is teaming up with TechGYRLS to take learning out of the lecture hall.
The YWCA Greater Green Bay’s TechGYRLS program seeks to empower young girls and encourage them to pursue careers within science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
During Tuesday’s event, girls ages 8-14 participated in hands-on STEAM activities and interacted directly with NWTC’s female instructors and leaders, giving them a firsthand look at the careers that are shaping the future.
Associate Dean for Engineering Technologies Jill Thiede stresses the importance of hands-on learning — especially for children.
“I think representation matters and being able to see yourself in people and say, ‘Hey, I know other people can do this. Other women have done this. I can do this.’ Representation matters. It helps them say, ‘Yup, this is a career that would be great for me,’” says Thiede.
Thiede pushes girls to be just as hands-on as the boys, with hope to fulfill NWTC’s future technician needs.
