TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — There’s a saying people in Northeast Wisconsin may be familiar with–“It’s cooler by the lake.”
And with the warm weather lingering into Monday, many are heading to the shores of Lake Michigan, to find some relief.
It bills itself, as the best in Wisconsin. The 50-acre spot of sand, called Neshotah Beach in Two Rivers.
“Here in Two Rivers, we have a pretty amazing shoreline on Lake Michigan. This is really our main public beach,” said Mike Mathis, Two Rivers Parks and Recreation Director.
Mike Mathis says when summer temperatures soar, people head to the shore.
“There’s a lot of Lake Michigan beach that extends south from this area, that’s open to the public as well. So, if you want the little quieter spots, maybe away from the crowds, then you can go closer to our pier area, or even on the other side of downtown,” he said.
On Monday morning, Jerry Krizka, and Marina Melikhov checked out the shoreline conditions.
“Oh, it’s so much fun. I love it. Our Lake Michigan. It’s like a sea, or ocean, so it’s very, very therapeutic,” said Marina Melikhov, Killdeer, Illinois.
“It’s beautiful. It’s fine, They obviously upkeep this. It’s very nice. The water’s a little chilly, but I’m going to throw her in anyway,” laughed Jerry Krizka, Killdeer, Illinois.
But is it really cooler by the lake? Mike Mathis says Neshotah Beach typically is.
“We are actually sticking into Lake Michigan by several miles, so we’re really on a point here at Two Rivers. So we get all the great cool air,” he said.
And perhaps the cool water too.
“It is Lake Michigan, one of the largest lakes in the world. It’s definitely refreshing, and we see a lot of people out swimming. The kids never care about the temperature. The kids are always in the water, having fun,” said Mathis.
Neshotah Beach does not have lifeguards on duty.
Officials say people need to use caution, and know the risks before venturing into the water.
