MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Manitowoc County could add a half-percent sales tax on Tuesday.
Adding the tax would generate $7.5 to $9.5 million per year, according to the resolution.
“The Finance Committee has carefully reviewed the finances of the county and has determined that adoption of a county sales and use tax is in the county’s best interest to ensure adequate funding for county operations, programs, and services on a continuing and ongoing basis; and, whereas, after careful consideration and review, the county board of supervisors of the county of Manitowoc wishes to adopt a sales and use tax in order to mitigate the impact of rising costs on property taxes while still ensuring adequate funding for county operations, programs and services,” the tax should be adopted, the proposed ordinance states.
If approved, the tax would take effect Jan. 1, 2025.
Currently, only four of Wisconsin’s 72 counties do not levy a sales tax for county purposes. The others are Racine, Waukesha, and Winnebago, according to the state Dept. of Revenue.
The County Board meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Heritage Center, 1701 Michigan Avenue, Manitowoc.
