KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – About 600 people of all ages turned out Wednesday morning for the annual “Touch a Truck” event at Hydro Park in downtown Kaukauna.
The campaign is designed to highlight not only the big machines, but the people behind them.
“It’s just a great way to introduce the kids to some of the options, as they age, and jobs that they could get into, and really showcase what the community is all about,” said Sarah Wroblewski, Kaukauna Public Library Youth Services Librarian.
Wroblewski says hands-on interaction is encouraged.
“They can ask their questions. What does this do? What is this for? And it’s really a great way for them to experience that in a wholesome way, with their grown-ups, and other family members,” she said.
The big red trucks from Kaukauna Fire and Rescue are typically a popular spot to stop. Joe Resch is an Assistant Chief.
“I think the kids just like trucks, big trucks. Kind of see everything they do. It’s great for us to get to meet the kids and kind of explain what we do as firefighters too. And especially what we do with the ambulance, and how we can help the community being paramedics and firefighters. So, it’s an exciting thing to do every year,” said Resch.
Near the other end of the block, Len Fleming and his twin sons from Kaukauna put the horn in a utility truck to the test.
“So far, they love it. They really do. They love the dump trucks. They love the construction equipment. So yeah, they get a kick out of it. They love to pull on the air horn. It’s the biggest thing. Actually, they’re hoping to be garbage men. They love garbage trucks. So they were hoping to see one of them,” said Fleming.
From law enforcement cruisers, to large city graders, there were 10 different vehicles to try. Wroblewski says Kaukauna’s next possible job force looks, and sounds relatively good.
“We do have our future police force. We do have our future firefighters. We have our future dump truck drivers, and our future horn blowers,” she said.
It was the 4th year for touch a truck event. The Kaukauna Public Library organized the activities. There was also a petting zoo and a photo-op with characters from the animated television series “PAW Patrol.”
