(WTAQ-WLUK) — Construction is scheduled to begin Monday on a project impacting a portion of State Highway 172.
According to the Wisconsin DOT, work will occur on a 2.3-mile stretch of WIS 172 from WIS 54 in the village of Hobart to the entrance of Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport.
Among the improvements to be made are culvert replacement and mainline and roundabout resurfacing.
Traffic impacts:
Culvert replacement: WIS 172 will be closed and detoured at WIS 54 for approximately two months starting Monday. There is a hard closure just east of the WIS 54/County E (the red star on the map). No vehicles will be allowed to pass.
Access will remain open at all times to the airport, businesses and properties in the closed portion of WIS 172. Motorists must pay attention to signage and access WIS 172 at the appropriate location for their destination of travel.
After the culvert replacement is finished and the highway opens, there will be a short-term (approximately one week) WIS 172 and County GE roundabout.
Roundabout resurfacing: WIS 172 will be closed to traffic at County GE for up to one week while the roundabout is being milled/paved. There is a hard closure at the roundabout (the orange star on the map). No vehicles will be allowed to pass.
Access will remain open at all times to the airport, businesses, and properties in the closed portion of WIS 172. Motorists must pay attention to signage and access WIS 172 at the appropriate location for their destination of travel.
Detour: During both closures culvert structure replacement and County GE roundabout work, WIS 172 traffic will be detoured north along I-41 to WIS 54 to WIS 172, and vice versa.
Mainline resurfacing: During mainline resurfacing following culvert replacement, the roadway will be open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures and flagging operations.
Project improvements:
This is a resurface-level improvement project with a box culvert replacement. Improvements include:
- Resurfacing mainline WIS 172 (mill 4.5” and overlay 4.5”)
- Removing the steel arch culvert pipe between WIS 54 and S Overland Road and constructing a new box culvert (This will require a two-month closure of WIS 172).
- Frost heave repair
- Pavement markings
- Shoulder rumble strips
- Shoulder aggregate
WisDOT officials say the existing pavement surface is deteriorating, so the resurfacing and frost heave repair will reduce surface roughness and provide a smoother, safer ride for motorists. The improvements will also extend the life of the pavement structure and reduce the costs of future maintenance. Repairing and replacing the culvert structure will help ensure adequate drainage to mitigate flooding.
