GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Hundreds of brand-new books were distributed Monday to students at a Green Bay elementary school, just in time for summer vacation.
For the last four years, Imperial Supplies has been collaborating with Brown County United Way to host the Summer Sendoff Book Drive. It aims to provide every student at Howe Elementary Community School with new books to read once the school year ends.
The majority of the 375 books given to students this year were purchased from Lion’s Mouth, a bookstore in downtown Green Bay. Organizers say the selection process was meticulous, with teachers handpicking books tailored to the unique interests of each class.
“The whole idea behind this is obviously, reading is very important to childhood development,” said Angie Bergstrom, senior director of human resources at Imperial Supplies. “We want to support reading and literacy in the Green Bay area, and so this allows us to give the kids that fun, end-of-year, school-year sendoff. It gives them some fun activities to do in the summer.”
Along with the books, students also received a bag filled with coloring books, crayons, colored pencils, fidget spinners, sidewalk chalk, activity books and a list of summer events being hosted by the Brown County Library.
Additionally, the owners of Happy Joes in east Green Bay donated 400 coupons to give each student a free Little Joe Pizza with a purchase of a kid’s beverage this summer.
