It was a rough Saturday for state college basketball teams. The 4th ranked Marquette Golden Eagles got rolled by top ranked UConn in Hartford 81-53. The game was competitive for the first 10 minutes when it was tied at 18 but the Huskies dominated the rest of the way. Kam Jones led Marquette with 15, Tyler Kolek was held to 7 on 2 of 11 shooting. The Golden Eagles are now 19-6 on the year, 10-4 in the Big East, three games back of the defending National Champions.
The 20th ranked Wisconsin Badgers lost in overtime to the Hawkeyes in Iowa City, 88-86. Wisconsin led by as many as 13 in the first half but trailed by 9 in the second before rallying to force the extra period. Iowa’s Tony Perkins collected a loose ball under the hoop for the game winning basket with 1.3 seconds left in OT. Steven Crowl led Wisconsin with 22 points, A.J. Storr added 21. The Badgers have dropped five of their last six games to fall to 17-9 on the year, 9-6 in Big Ten play.
St. Norbert got upset by Marian 63-60 in Fon du Lac. Marian winning for just the fifth time all season. The Green Knights got 18 points and 10 rebounds from Jamison Nikolai but were denied a share of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference regular season title. Wisconsin Lutheran claimed the outright championship by beating Lakeland 87-75. St. Norbert finished the regular season 20-5, 15-3 in the NACC. Seeded second in the conference tournament, the Knights will host Concordia of Chicago in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday night.
