GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Bearing gifts, a team of hockey players surprised young patients at a Green Bay hospital.
Members of the Green Bay Gamblers delivered more than 6,000 stuffed animals to Aurora BayCare Monday.
The donations were collected from the team’s annual Teddy Bear Toss over the weekend. During Saturday’s game, fans were asked to bring a new teddy bear to the game and when the Gamblers scored their first goal, fans tossed the bears onto the ice.
Aurora Baycare pediatrician, Dr. Donald Beno, says while the bears are given out to patients throughout the year, drop-off day is especially exciting because kids get to meet some of the players.
“Unfortunately most things that happen to a child at a doctor’s office, they perceive as being painful or not fun and this is a way to end the visit with a fun and nice gift as they’re leaving,” he said.
Since its inception, the Teddy Bear Toss game has produced more than 105,000 teddy bears for area pediatric patients and other charitable organizations where it has helped a child in a time of need.
