DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The school board for the Unified School District of De Pere voted Monday night to approve the scheduling of a referendum to exceed the spending levy cap.
When placed on the April 2 ballot, voters will be asked to approve spending $4.75 million a year for five years. The fiscal impact would be $1.34 per $1,000 of equalized value.
The resolution offers this explanation for the need:
“The District has an anticipated $3 million budget deficit for the 2024-25 fiscal year that will grow to an anticipated $6.8 million for the 2028-29 fiscal year without changes to present services, class section sizes, personnel, course offerings, and/or sports/clubs offered within the District. The administration recommends a $4.75 million five-year non-recurring referendum to provide additional revenue to close the funding gap.”
At one point, the district was considering holding a referendum this spring for more than $200 million, in part to build a new high school. Those plans have been put on hold, however.
The district may hold a $22 million referendum for capital projects; such a vote has not been scheduled but could be held in November.
