EGG HARBOR, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Leaders in Door County are working on ways to build a new and safer network of pathways connecting the communities.
The first information session for the “Egg Harbor Trails Initiative” was held Tuesday morning.
Dozens of people crowded the top floor of the Kress Pavilion in Egg Harbor, looking at ways to build a better trail. Patty Albers owns property in the area, and says getting around Door County on a bicycle, can be difficult.
“It is doable to bike up here. Not so easy on the weekend though, when there’s a lot of road traffic. But there are certain areas where there’s a lot of easy backroads to bike on and there’s some areas where you can’t get from point A to B, without going on the highway,” said Patty Albers, Green Bay.
“We were asked to help with creating some conceptual planning around the trail route. Some feasibility studies. Can this even happen? And what do these potentially look like?” asked Patrick Lydon, National Park Service Landscape Architect.
Patrick Lydon says the year-round trail network could include a mountain bike system, or hiking pathways. He says public involvement is key.
“Just the initial planning can be a challenge, right? So that’s why community engagement, the community partnerships are critical, because these typically are long-term projects,” said Lydon.
“We don’t know how much it’s going to cost,” said Megan Sawyer, Egg Harbor Village Administrator.
Megan Sawyer says any trail system will likely take years to build.
“It will be in the millions of dollars. However, with that said, the village, and all of our partners will do everything they possibly can in terms of solidifying grant funding, in order to help this move forward,” she said.
“I think this is an excellent opportunity. People are always looking for more things to do outside. So to offer safe biking options, I think is really going to be beneficial for Door County overall,” said Albers.
Door County officials say they expect there will be more information sessions in the future.
They say they want more feedback too.
