GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ – WLUK) — The Green Bay Packers are once again taking aim at cancer this October.
The team, along with Bellin Health and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation, kicked off its seventh year of Packers Vs. Cancer Tuesday.
Throughout the month of October, the organizations will hold a variety of fundraising efforts and awareness initiatives, including the sale of a Packers vs. Cancer hat, available for purchase at the Packer Pro Shop. Each hat sold will result in a $5 donation directly to the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation. Additionally, shoppers can contribute by adding $1 or more to their purchase from Sept. 19 through Oct. 16 that will go directly to the Vince Lombardi Cancer Foundation as well.
Helping with the launch was Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon and running back Patrick Taylor. The two visited with cancer patients and Nixon shared his story about how his mom’s cancer diagnosis impacted his family.
“It’s something I personally went through and it’s just a chance for me to tell my story and my mom’s story and let people know that we’re athletes but we’re humans too, and we have the same emotions and feelings they go through as a normal person and I think it’s important,” Nixon said.
Nixon says he will give the Packers vs. Cancer hat to his mom during Week 5 when the Packers take on the Raiders in Las Vegas.
The team will also recognize cancer survivors and the ongoing fight against cancer at the Sept. 28 Packers-Lions game at Lambeau Field. Various videoboard promotions will run during the game and fans in attendance will be able to show their support with the Packers vs. Cancer wall flag giveaway.
