APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – An officer with the City of Appleton Police Department has been charged with forging signatures on a warrant to be used in a drug conspiracy case.
Jeremy Haney, 37, was charged in a three-count criminal complaint on Monday.
An investigation by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office alleges that Haney, a narcotics investigator assigned to work with the Lake Winnebago Metropolitan Enforcement Group (LWAM), forged the signatures of an Outagamie County Assistant District Attorney and an Outagamie County Circuit Court Judge on a GPS warrant to be used in a large-scale drug conspiracy case involving the distribution of fentanyl.
The complaint indicates that Haney admitted to losing the agreed-upon warrant calling for a 45-day tracker to be placed on the defendant’s vehicle. Allegedly, Haney then forged the signatures onto another warrant that listed a 90-day tracking period.
Outagamie County’s Assistant DA noticed the forged signatures ahead of a plea deal with the defendant in federal court, prompting a delay in the prosecution. The GPS tracker was removed at 44 days, according to the criminal complaint.
Haney is charged with uttering a forgery, misconduct in office, and obstructing an officer. The three counts face a maximum of six years, three and a half years, and nine months in prison, respectively.
