GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Green Bay Packers held their annual shareholders meeting Monday and predictably there was talk about the quarterback position, as the franchise transitions from Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love.
When talking about each quarterback to the 7,825 fans in attendance at Lambeau Field, president Mark Murphy was pleased with the fans’ response.
“Couple things that kind of stood out for me, obviously, the crowd responded positively to Jordan Love and mentions of him,” Murphy said. “I was also pleased how positive in the cheering that we got when I talked about Aaron Rodgers. I thought that speaks highly of our fans.”
Rodgers has now moved on to the New York Jets after an offseason trade, opening the door for Love, a 2020 first-round pick. Rodgers’ exit shows even great quarterbacks rarely play for one team anymore.
“It’s very rare for a player that’s that good and commands that kind of interest across the league to play for one team his whole career,” Murphy said. “I mean, Tom Brady, Brett Favre.”
For the first time since 2019 when he was at Utah State, Love will enter the season as a team’s starting quarterback. Because it’s been that long since he was given the keys to an offense, how long will it take the Packers to know what they actually have in their former first-round pick?
“Comparing it a little bit to Aaron’s first year, first year as a starter, I’d say at least half a season to know,” Murphy said. “I think we ended up with a losing record that year, but we saw enough of Aaron to know we had something special.”
Rodgers won four NFL MVP awards and led the Packers to one Super Bowl title. Now it’s up to Love to keep up the great quarterback play in Green Bay.
“Everyone that’s been here has kind of seen the standard that has been set by the guys that have been here before,” Love said. “I think we just continue to do that, carry it over; just great practice habits, trying to build that consistency every day and be able to give it everything you got every day, not taking any reps off, not taking any rep for granted.”
Training camp kicks off Wednesday as as a new era at quarterback begins.
NEW VIDEO BOARDS
The Packers unveiled their new video boards. The new boards doubled the width of the previous boards, upgraded to 4K video and feature new audio speakers and amps. The equipment room for the video boards was also updated.
The new video boards are part of a stadium renovation project funded by the team’s most recent stock sale. It includes new scoreboards on the east and west sides of the stadium as well as concourse improvements meant to enhance the fan experience and speed up concessions.
PACKERS BUY FOAMATION
More than one hour before the meeting kicked off the Packers announced another business move, as it has acquired Milwaukee-based Foamation, the manufacturer of cheesehead hats.
The meeting comes less than a week after the Packers organization announced it had a $68.6 million operating profit during the 2023 fiscal year.
BUTLER TO THE BOARD
Former Packers safety and Pro Football Hall of Fame member LeRoy Butler was named to the Packers’ Board of Directors.
RODGERS’ NUMBER TO BE RETIRED
Murphy said once Rodgers retires the Packers plan on retiring his No. 12 jersey, maybe the following year.
