A host of area athletes brought home gold medals at the WIAA State Track and Field meet in LaCrosse over the weekend. In Division one, West De Pere’s Eliza Aitken won gold in the pole vault and the Phantoms brought home two more gold medals winning the 4×200 and 4×400 relay events. Thea Kral of Ashwaubenon took first in the discus. In Division two, the Notre Dame Tritons 4×100 relay team came in first, Freedom captured the 4×800 relay and Lydia Merrick of the Irish won gold in the high jump. Mikaela Helling of Two Rivers was first in the 3200 meter run. In Division 3, Nolie Anderson of St. Mary Catholic won the discus. For the boys, relay teams that broke the tape first included Kaukauna’s 4×100 relay in Division 1 along with Kimberly in the 4×200 and Neenah winning the 4×400 relay. Hortonville’s Ben Smith brought home gold in the shot put and he also won silver in the discus. In Division 2, the Denmark 4×100 relay team broke the state record in winning that event, Ayden Hart of Winneconne was a double winner in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles and Conner Murphy of Sheboygan Falls won the 3200 meter race. In Division 3, another state record fell in the 110 hurdles as Cade Stingle of Shiocton won the race and followed that up with gold in the 300 hurdles. Charlie Vater of Iola-Scandanavia was a double winner in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Emmitt Kietlinski of Gresham-Bowler captured the high jump.
The team champions for the girls were DeForest in Division 1 with only two qualifiers at state, Osceola won the D2 title with Freedom coming in 4th and Fall Creek took the D3 crown. For the boys, Arrowhead and Stevens Point shared the D1 title, Lakeside Lutheran won in Division 2 and Shiocton brought home the title in Division 3.
The WIAA Boys Tennis tournament also took place this weekend in Madison. Oscar Corwin on Brookfield East won the Division 1 singles championship with a three set victory over De Pere’s Nicholas Balthazor. Lincoln Marshall and Daniel Egelhoff of Marquette won the doubles crown. In Division 2, Max Watchmaker of University School was the singles winner with Vibu Guda and Sanjit Madireddi of Brookfield Academy winning the doubles championship.
