BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Taylor Schabusiness’ trial will remain in Brown County with a local jury, despite her attorney’s argument that “a fair and impartial trial cannot be held in Brown County.”
Schabusiness, 25, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse and third-degree sexual assault for allegedly attacking Shad Thyrion last year. She has pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. She is scheduled to stand trial July 21.
Her attorney, Christopher Froelich, argued that a fair trial was impossible in Green Bay due to the amount of publicity as well as other factors. Froelich argued that the media coverage of the case went well beyond typical pre-trial coverage.
He requested to either move the trial out of Brown County, or pick the jury elsewhere and bring the panel back to Green Bay to hear the case.
But prosecutors argued that an impartial jury could be found in Brown County, and the news coverage had been statewide and national.
The case became particularly noteworthy after Schabusiness attacked her previous attorney.
To help screen jurors, the state said it would not object to special questionnaires being sent to prospective jurors about their media consumption of the case.
