STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The 5th “Door County Seed Library Program” is underway.
Inside an old card catalog, rows of radish and squash seeds are ripe for picking.
“The seed library group has packaged over 14,000 packages of seeds this year,” said Laura Kayacan, Door County Librarian.
Kayacan says the seeds are free, but people are asked to take about 10 packets.
“It’s a lot of fun to see the families coming in and people getting excited about the seeds,” she said.
It’s the third year Holly Hajny and her family are getting seeds.
“We picked out different types of beans, and local flowers for the butterflies. And we can also choose that new kind of beets.” said Holly Hajny, Sturgeon Bay.
Stephanie Yousef says she and her father use the seeds to grow a garden each spring.
“These seeds, are usually grown locally, by other farmers, and different people out there. There’s all kinds of knowledgeable people here, that you can connect with, and link with, network with, and learn more about growing food,” said Stephanie Yousef, Brussels.
“I think it’s real important that people know where their food comes from, how it was grown,” said Mark Taylor, Seed Library Volunteer.
Taylor says people don’t necessarily need a big garden.
“Use a grow pot, and you can at least grow some tomatoes, or bell peppers for yourself for the coming year,” he said.
Laura Kayacan agrees. She says proof is in a project, where she grows beans at work.
“You’ll see that it’s producing beans. This is like the third generation of beans. So I have them in some of these potted plants around my desk for fun,” she said.
The seed library is scheduled to be open throughout the spring at all eight Door County Library Branches.
