LAKE WINNEBAGO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Sturgeon spearing can be a bit difficult to explain to non-Wisconsinites even as just a concept. But imagine trying to tell someone you speared a fish that weighed nearly 200 pounds and is “taller” than 10 players on the Milwaukee Bucks.
James Gishkowsky shared his tale after spearing this monster on Lake Winnebago Tuesday.
Weighing in at over 177 pounds and measuring at 79.9 inches (6′ 8″), this sturgeon is certainly one of the highlights of the season.
Gishkowsky said he’s only ever seen three sturgeon before snagging this one. His previous biggest sturgeon weighed in at 96 pounds — nearly half of his new biggest.
Gishkowsky says he had to call in reinforcements to help him hoist the fish out of the hole.
“It’s a rush when you get something like this. It’s a once in a lifetime,” he said.
The season continues until Feb. 26 unless harvest caps are met sooner.
